The land of oblivion

Now, let's talk about a movie based on history facts...

Year: 2011

Director: Michale Boganim

Genre: Drama

The scene takes place on the 26th of April 1986 at Pripiat near the power plant of Chernobyl.
The First film to get the right to film on the area around the power plant of Chernobyl, The Land of Oblivion combines fiction and history in order to share with the audience the feelings and experiences of the inhabitants during these events in the city of
Pripiat.Three characters would be presented and followed from the 26 of April 1986.Anya and Piotr, a fireman, are getting married when Piotr is called to the place of the fire. Nikolai, a forest ranger, goes around the area and then refuses to leave the city. Then, Alexej, an engineer sends his son, Valery, far away from the events to protect him and then would help the citizens as much as possible at the risk of being reduced to silence by the authorities.Lots of lives would be messed up following this disaster and the hope of overcoming it is hard to find. Ten years after the 26th of April 1986, we’ll see Pripiat, a completely devastated and uninhabitable city: after the contamination, the city became a “no man’s land” and a strange tourist attraction. Anya became a tour guide in the region that she now hates. Valery looked desperately for his father; and meanwhile, Nikolaï refused to stop to cultivate his poisoned garden.
It is a story of love, family and broken lives following a disaster. Those lives then become meaningless because of Chernobyl and the damages it caused.

Criticism:

A Fiction based on the Chernobyl’s disaster, very well orchestrated. Instead of immersing the audience in a drama film; the disturbing stories of the protagonists are enough to understand the consequences of this day in 1986. Despite totally fictitious stories, the movie doesn’t loose any meaning and stays realistic. Michale Boganim remembers how this tragedy left a mark on the memories of the inhabitants of Pripiat; and sometimes forgets that it’s a fiction, not a documentary.
Unfortunately, despite the realism of the facts, it maybe lacks an emphasis on the politic pressure (for instance the difficulties to obtain an authorization to film) and the sufferings to overcome.
